Building Friendships Across Borders
Every month the Deaf Development Programme receives a few visitors but we were thrilled today to welcome members of the Maryknoll family, the Maryknoll Lay Missioners’ Friends Across Borders group. The group will be visiting the various Maryknoll projects in Phnom Penh during their ten day stay in Cambodia. Five of our Deaf Tour Guides (aka specially trained Deaf staff members), along with the DDP Director Charlie Dittmeier, spent time explaining the work of DDP and our history. The staff also shared about their personal stories growing up Deaf in Cambodia, the challenges they face, and how the projects of DDP have changed their lives. Many thanks to our two interpreters (Phirom and Sreynuch). Interpreting from your second to your third language is a real challenge and they did great. We even had one visitor return on his afternoon break for a haircut and shave at the barber shop. Looks like the barbers did a good job!
